OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is training AI to code with the assistance of a global network of contractors. These contractors have been hired to instruct the AI on how to write basic code, potentially causing a significant impact on the software engineering industry in the future.
ChatGPT is a language model powered by GPT-3.5 which uses deep learning to provide in-depth answers to questions. It is optimized for natural conversation, but its capabilities extend beyond that to tasks such as programming and poetry creation. However, ChatGPT cannot accomplish these tasks without guidance and training, either through supervised or reinforced learning.

A report by Semafor states that OpenAI has been rapidly hiring contractors from Latin America and Eastern Europe in the past six months. The purpose of these hires is to gather data for the AI technology to learn how to perform software engineering tasks, specifically coding, using natural language. An anonymous software developer from South America is quoted in the report, stating that they underwent an unpaid coding test for OpenAI which involved explaining, in written English, how they would approach a coding problem rather than just fixing it.
OpenAI has developed Codex, a technology capable of transforming natural language into functional code. It also powers GitHub's Copilot feature. The company has further aspirations and it is yet to be determined if its future developments will be incorporated into ChatGPT or if Codex will become Codex 2.0.

As a software developer, if you're worried about the outcome, the report states that it's common for AI development to face major challenges, and there's still a high probability that OpenAI will encounter obstacles in its attempt to automate coding. However, OpenAI can provide non-coders with a creative bent, the ability to construct anything from websites to video games by conversing with AI, even without prior coding knowledge.
